Birthdays and Friends and Food

It's been a busy few weeks. Mostly because this is the time of year where attention moves outside and our focus is on planting and looking after meat birds. It is also the time of year for our anniversary and my birthday. Not just my birthday, LOTS of birthdays of friends in June!
Hubby finally got to a little project I have been wanting done for some time now.
The travel trunk above has been kicking around almost since we moved here. It was a great find at a country estate sale, years ago. The kind of estate sale where you wished you had a bunch more money because EVERYTHING was amazing.  Anyway, the trunk comes with its own protective cover, even the handles had their own cover, laced on to keep the leather safe.

Under cover, the trunk is pretty much like new. The canvas certainly does its job well.

Inside it sort of reminds me of a coffin, all that generously gathered fabric. A good sized box for storing stuff, don't you think? Yup, that's what I thought too. However, once full, this thing is going to be heavy, and awkward to move around. That's where the little project comes in.

Castors! So, Marty made a frame of wood, attached the casters and onto this goes the trunk.

Voila! I finally spent a little "me time" after having Aaron pull out the three bins and one box of fabric for me to go through. What doesn't fit, goes. I was able to eliminate the larger two of the three Rubbermaid bins and the box. Not bad. And where does such a trunk go so it isn't in the way but easily accessed when necessary? We then pulled the two short shelves from under my studio table and replaced them with this trunk. Yes, that meant I had to find somewhere to put the boxes on those shelves but I was able to reduce things by two of those boxes and reconfigure one shelf to remain under the table too.  I put several nice thick felt chair pads under the shelf so it also slides out easily when needed now too. Over all very satisfying and some reduction was accomplished at the same time. Nice.  I will have to revisit the trunk as the contents right now are not hyper organised but that will be a project for another time.

Oh, and I got a lovely second hand pressure canner/cooker too. Something new to learn.

AND, I got to share my birthday with Ronna whose birthday it also was.  She came out for lunch and some afternoon thrifting.

I made French sorrel soup, Einkorn flat-bread, and we shared some of my canned strawberry lemonade concentrate, canned up last summer. It was lovely.
