BIRDS
"A little madness in the spring is wholesome even for a king." So said Emily Dickinson.
She is wholly correct. As soon as we stopped using the woodstove, my husband opened up the door one morning and out flew a baby Grackle, shown here, caught up in a towel. Yesterday morning we found a very energetic Goldfinch totally obsessed with our gazing globe in the vegetable garden. He spent most of the day attacking and examining the mirrored globe, while you could see his female counterpart (?) look on from a nearby tree. The day being so hot, I thought the poor little fellow would expire spending all his time at the globe, so we took a tea towel and covered it up, hoping he would find some other distraction. Unfortunately he only redoubled his efforts to find out where his reflection disappeared to. Thankfully, he did eventually give up and leave. No sign of him today.

Love the bird stories, Jen.
What happened to the baby grackle? And the rest of the family? Were they all in the chimney?
They let the Grackle outside and off it went. There were no other birds in the chimney or woodstove.
This morning we watched a very determined Robin yanking away on the string that was attached to a stick in the vegetable garden. He finally gave up, but gave it a good effort. I guess everything is fair game in this season of nest-building.
